The £12million Aura Innovation Centre (AIC) will deliver ground-breaking low-carbon projects and kick-start new ideas by bringing together experts at the University of Hull with businesses in the Humber region and beyond. It will provide a ‘front door’ for the University of Hull, giving businesses easy access to cutting-edge facilities, specialist funded support and a space to innovate and collaborate with academic and industry experts.
The AIC is about providing practical support to SMEs to develop their products and services to meet the low-carbon agenda and to provide a collaborative space to facilitate the involvement of academia and large business in one space. Its aim is to foster innovation and research to address the real challenges faced by the offshore wind and low-carbon energy industries. It will also be about developing and rooting an effective low-carbon energy supply chain in the Energy Estuary with the ultimate goal of regenerating a region and contributing to clean growth, which is central to the UK’s Industrial Strategy.
The AIC has a number of different areas and facilities including Business Areas and Solutions Areas as well as meeting spaces and research zones. Over £1.1million of cutting-edge research facilities have been installed into the centre, this includes a state-of-the-art printed circuit board suite, augmented reality and large green screen area, virtual reality capabilities, materials characterisation suite, high-tech 3D printers capable of printing recycled plastic, carbon fibre and metal as well as a mechanical workshop area. As the centre grows, the aim is to provide SMEs with support and advice through each of the stages of product or service development – from ideas generation through to R&D, testing, analysis and taking the product to market.
The Humber is at the forefront of the UK’s ambitious plans to become net-zero for carbon emissions by 2050. With the region hoping to reach this landmark by 2040 – a decade ahead of the country – the new Aura Innovation Centre will doubtless play a starring role in the future of the Humber.
